Putting forth two of my favorite works about being woman, today on Women’s Day. This is the first, and the other is out on the next post! Do read both, they complement each other, in the sense that, one could be called ‘a specific fact’ and the other ‘the larger truth’.
Let Me, Please.
I’m killed before I am born
I’m silenced before I can storm
I’m married off before the norm
Why, I say, why?
Only because I was born a girl?
Please, please. Don’t do this.
I beg you. Don’t do this.
Stop yourself from adding to your sins.
Let me exist, see the world
Let me learn, study my fill
Let me dress, wear what I please
Let me fight, win my battles
Let me attack, conquer my monsters
Let me stay here
Let me love myself
Let me rule my life
Let me flaunt my curves
Let me use my brains
Let me try and fail
Let me give my heart
Let me witness it break
Let me be a mother
Let me cherish my kid
Let me get weak and old
Let me have people who care for my soul
Let me live long enough
So one day I can proudly say
“I lived life fully, freely and fiercely.
Exactly the way I wanted mine to be.”
